Every few months, I return to the same show and pretend it is an accident. I know the pauses, the rooms, the exact moment a character will say the thing I needed them to say.
There is a particular kind of comfort in a story that stays put while you change around it. The show has not become wiser. I have simply brought different questions to it.
To love a show is to let it become a little room inside your life. You visit when you need to remember that a feeling has had a shape before.
A familiar story does not keep us from changing. It gives the change somewhere to land.
